What is not serving you?

Fall is a time of the year for change. Here in the Northeast United States it is a time of cooler air, apple picking, harvesting and changing leaves. A time when the Earth winds down and prepares for a little hibernation. It is a time of reflection and joy from what we have done and experienced through the Summer.

For me it is also a time to let go of things that do not serve me. As I harvest and preserve my garden vegetables for the Winter I am appreciating all that they give me. Knowledge of how they grow, the care I give them and nutrition they give me. In life, these concepts are parallel. We all need knowledge of how to care for ourselves and strive to fine nourishment for us. Are you getting this care and nourishment? What is it in your life that is really not serving your higher purpose?

Take a look at what your daily life consists of and what it is that you are struggling with that is not really serving your purpose. Do you hang on to guilt because you feel you are not doing enough? Avoid asking for help because you feel it makes you look weak? Are you shying away from relationships because of a bad break up? Do you avoid speaking up at meetings because you feel you don’t know enough? Comparing yourself to others and you feel you don’t measure up? Holding on to an old flame that really doesn’t respect you but you can’t shake it? Avoiding talking about things that hurt you for fear the other person will be angry? Are you enabling yourself to stay in the same place because you know it so well? Are these feeling serving you and making your life what you want it to be? If not, then what can you do to let go of these feelings to help you move forward? Where do these feeling come from and how did they take hold in your mind?

We should take some time to talk honestly to ourselves. Sometimes we need to talk to each other. Get out what we are really feeling to actually see where we are in life and where we want to go. What is it in your life that is holding you hostage so that you are not moving in the direction you want? Is there anything that does not serve you that you need to get rid of?

A long time ago I used to journal about all my feelings and general thoughts about things. It was very useful to get it out and then read it to myself. I stopped that because life got in the way. I have been doing some continuing education and this topic of journaling has come to the forefront once more. There it was staring me in the face again. I picked it back up. Not every single day but I try my best to get it done daily. Maybe this is something you should try. See if it helps you to find the why behind your thoughts and spark the motivation to move forward. Wake up just a little bit early in the morning or just before bed and write what comes to mind. Doesn’t matter what it is, just keep writing. It can be as simple as “I need to fold the laundry”, or “my boss treated me like a jerk today for no reason”. Just keep writing. You will find that your writing will turn to some deep thoughts that are buried in your mind. The more you write what’s on your mind the more it will reveal. Then you can start the process of getting rid of the things that don’t serve you.
