Foods During the Four WInds

Last time I spoke about the Four Winds of Womanhood in a nut shell. Let's touch upon some foods that are beneficial during these times.

Spring Wind, aka Follicular: This is a time to eat foods that are light and vibrant. Things like salads, lots of veggies. Lean light meats and a nutrient dense grain like oats to keep your energy up. Your metabolism is slower right now so keeping the calories on the light side is beneficial. Keep in mind that plant foods that mimic the bodies estrogen, called phytoestrogens, is beneficial at this time. Your levels are low right now so it is safe to say it's going to balance you better in this stage. Think soy, tempeh, flaxseeds. Fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, are very helpful as well to get your gut healthy and ready for ovulation.

Summer Wind, aka Ovulatory: Estrogen levels are high now. Choose raw veggies and fruit. Lighter grains like quinoa and rice. You are still in the slower metabolism stage here so try not to overload. Red bell pepper, leafy greens, raspberries etc.

Fall Wind, aka Luteal: Ok girls, here is your time to eat more calories. Your metabolism is speeding up here. Eat slow burning carbs now so that you can chill out any sugar cravings. Think brown rice, sweet potato, roasted root vegetables. Eat more foods high in B vitamins, calcium, magnesium and fiber. Time for apples, chick peas, leafy greens.

Winter Wind, aka Menstrual: Your hormones are at their lowest now so increase your intake of protein and healthy fats. Eat fruits and veggies with a low glycemic index. Foods higher in iron as well because you are losing some during this time. Red meat, beans, kelp, nori, blackberries, blueberries

This is a small example of the foods to eat in each phase. You get the idea. This will help to balance out hormones, keeps your energy, moods, cravings and weight at a manageable place for you to get through your days. This is what we should be doing, working WITH our bodies and not against it.
Each time we cram too much into say, our Winter wind phase, we get stressed. This is because it's a time to rest. In reality we cannot just take the week off. I know we have to work. Yet by choosing what to work on and eating the right foods in the phase your in you will better manage stress, PMS, and get what you need done successfully.

Love and Light,
                     Wendy
